Susie Wolff’s Story

Several years ago, at a chamber music party in New York, I had a reunion with a distant cousin, Susie Wolff. She told us that the last time she'd seen me was when we were children: Her parents brought her to my family's house in Yonkers, and I played on my half-size cello. She was very impressed.

She went home to Scarsdale and told her little playmate, "My cousin plays cello. When he grows up, he's going to be the world's most famous cellist!"

Not to be outdone, her playmate replied, "That's nothing. My cousin plays the piano, and when he grows up, he's going to be the world's most famous pianist!

Her friend's cousin grew up to be James Levine.

I told Susie, "Your friend won."
